Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do your instructors have?

In addition to being a seasoned instructor in our unique teaching strategies, all of our instructors are CPR and First Aid certified and most are Lifeguard certified as well.

What are your age limits for private lessons?

We begin private lessons for children at age three, with no limits at the upper end.   We have fulfilled students’ “bucket lists” when they were in their 80’s! Each lesson is individually focused for the particular student’s physical abilities and desires in mind.

Do students need to be strong swimmers?

Since we do not go out any farther than necessary for you to catch a wave, and because our instructor is consistently by your side teaching while you are in the water, it is not necessary for you to be a strong swimmer.  Additionally, the student is at most all times on top of the board.

How far in advance do I need to book a lesson or an event and what is required?

Usually, 48-hour notice is ample to reserve a private lesson for a group of 4 or less.  For larger groups, we appreciate as much prior notice as possible so that we can provide the best staff for your event.

At the time of booking, we require a 50% deposit, which, if your plans change, is fully refundable 24-hours in advance for private lessons of 4 students or less; 48-hours in advance for larger groups.

If we determine that the conditions won’t be amenable to a successful lesson or event and if you aren’t able to reschedule, the deposit will certainly be refunded as well.

The balance of payment for all lessons and events is due prior to its onset.

What equipment do I need to bring for a lesson?

We supply all the boards you will need for your lesson.  All you will need to bring is a towel! Please wear a secure bathing suit, water-friendly flip flops to cross the beach, and certainly a good 30 SPF+ water-resistant sunscreen (and remember the back of your legs!).  If you would like to wear a shirt as well, which is not necessary but may be your choice, please be sure that it is lightweight and does not retain water.

Where do you present the lessons and events?

We present all activities on the beaches of south Hutchinson Island.  As the ocean’s sand bottom shifts with waves and currents and sea conditions change, we will choose the best beach location for the success of your lesson or event.  The exact location may not be known until just prior to the time of meeting.

What if the water is too rough or too calm for a successful lesson?

We will always do our very best to present the most advantageous, safe, and successful lesson for you.  However, occasionally the wind and the waves do not cooperate. In that case, we will reschedule the lesson at a time convenient for you that appears to present better conditions.

Am I able to keep and use equipment after the lesson?

If you would like to keep the board(s) to practice your skills immediately following your lesson, we charge $15/day, which is 50% of our regular rental rate.

How many guests can you accommodate at a retreat or party and how do I reserve it?

We can accommodate as many guests as you would like!  If you plan to have a large group, the earlier you are able to book the event, the better.  At the time of booking, we require a 50% deposit based on the cost of your estimated guest count.  Three days (72 hours) prior to the event, we will confirm your guest count and adjust the balance accordingly.

I live on Hutchinson Island. Are you able to do lessons or parties at my home?

We are able to present lessons and events at a client’s Hutchinson Island location, but only if the beach, ocean, and tides there will provide the conditions needed for safety, success, and enjoyment.

If you are interested in holding an event at a private location, we will investigate those conditions before booking.  Please note that a 20% surcharge will be added to our regular rates for events held at client-chosen locations.

We are planning a retreat in your area and will be there for several days. What do you have to offer?

We love having groups come to visit!  With you, we would develop a program for your stay which might include a daily surf lesson for your entire group, extended equipment rentals, a mini-camp for one or more days, or a combination of all.  We also are able to assist with hotel and restaurant recommendations or reservations.

For each group, the plans would be personalized to offer the most enjoyable activities for your visit.  Just give us a call. We are here for you!
